They were friendly with one another, played some duos together over the years and went to each other's solo recitals and were friendly with one another. Those were the days when Karen couldn't speak a word of English; only French. Karen was always in a class by herself; a rose among the daisies. We were fortunate to have her among us.

I took many videos of her performances as a small child, so precocious, so precise and intense from the moment, she came to study with our wonderful, Russian trained teacher, Vera. She was as dedicated to Karen's musical development as her mother Yuki, who made sure she practised a lot...and the results speak for themselves.

One day Karen just disappeared from our close, little, musical community to study at Juilliard. We all knew she was destined for greater things. She had become at age 10 a big fish in a small pond. Her teacher, a second mother to Karen really, and the rest of us in the studio were sorry to lose our sparkling diamond.

You write brilliantly. I really enjoyed your very amusing blog. I've been meaning to read something of his for a while as I've heard of him a lot but am completely unfamiliar with his work. Interestingly enough, he once had a dispute with John Le Carré in the Guardian letters to the editor section. Looking for the link I discover that they just reconciled now after 15 years. The letters make a good example of how two brilliant men can let anger make themselves look like fools. Three men actually, as Christopher Hitchens also waded into the fray. http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/burning/le-carre-vs-rushdie.html

You should write your list of books!

wychykibwphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09518134502819450464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3464315899021168180.post-14407546310505375862012-11-18T10:17:02.093-07:002012-11-18T10:17:02.093-07:00Hey Eddie I'm glad your blogging again.

I think that you hit the nail on...Very succinct Ed. I think that you hit the nail on the head in regards to facilitators being commonly mislabeled as the facet itself. I also agree with you that although femininity and masculinity are not clearly definable terms, they still carry heavy meaning. It seems to be an increasing trend in our society, in pursuit of tolerance and acceptance, to throw away all labels of description for individuals- especially in relation to gender. This, I believe, is a terrible grievance. Without descriptors, the road to self-discovery becomes a next to impossible feat. While I ardently applaud the open acceptance policy of our society, I do think that our quest for its fulfilment has unintentionally contributed to the loss of meaning and purpose that our generation feels. The individual has lost pride in proclaiming who they believe themselves to be, for fear of causing public offence. Admittedly, I myself was taken back by Maya Angelou's poem. Her confident declaration of who she is as a woman came as a very refreshing read, as I am so tired of the long-lasting mantra bestowed upon women to "just shut up and look pretty." Our myth of the eternal feminine has discredited the purity and value of true femininity, and I believe that the same holds true for masculinity.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03583784459365223356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3464315899021168180.post-3979226345238524662012-04-21T12:55:52.015-06:002012-04-21T12:55:52.015-06:00Just so you can feel more sorry for me... that Ang...Just so you can feel more sorry for me... that Angelou poem describes EXACTLY the woman I just lost.JOSH BARKEYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02056229250824359708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3464315899021168180.post-1329295642043392182012-04-20T23:24:58.150-06:002012-04-20T23:24:58.150-06:00"Of course the occasional fight does break ou..."Of course the occasional fight does break out between girls but that's because everyone knows that they're catty.
